Samoëns can be as relaxing or exciting a destination as you like. For those who are seeking some activities here are some of our favourites :
Samoëns is part of Les Grands Massif, famous for its excellent family skiing and, for the more adventurous, its off piste skiing.
The Grand Massif ski area is home to over 148 slopes, 20 green slopes for beginners, 64 blue slopes and 50 red slopes for skiers with a medium level as well as 14 black slopes for experienced skiers.
Thanks to its high altitude and largely northern aspect, the skiing area has excellent snow conditions throughout the winter season. The slopes go up to 2480m where you will find an incredible view of Mont Blanc and the Chamonix valley. From there you can take the famous meandering ‘Cascade’ piste, all 14km of it(!), down to Sixt.
In short, Samoëns offers excellent skiing to skiers and snowboarders of every level.
Why suffer the crowds of Annecy for your paragliding holiday? Fly Samoëns! Samoëns is a really popular flying site with locals and visitors alike and is one of the rare places where paragliding is not only tolerated, it is encouraged. The cable car (10 minutes walk from the apartment) goes right to the official launch areaa and the landing area (beside the swimming pool complex) is wide, long and obstacle free, it is also a short 10 minute walk back to the apartment, or a 5 minute walk back to the cable car for another flight.
Unlike Annecy, where thermal activity does not start until the afternoon, Samoëns starts working during the morning and on into the evening. There is also enormous cross country potential to the north, south and into the Mont Blanc massif. And just 10 minutes by car is the famous Mieussy paragliding site, where it all started!
The local schools also teach in both English and French if you fancy some extra guidance.
Samoëns regularly hosts world class events and championships in Enduro and downhill mountain biking – see the Red Bull channel for more on that. The tracks are renowned for being long, fast paced and challenging – are you up to it?
However there is also plenty for those who prefer something a little less extreme. There are paths all along the valley floor weaving around the river and between the trees. You can follow the well marked and family friendly tracks up to Sixt to admire the waterfalls or down to Lac de Morillion, for a picnic and a swim.
Right opposite the apartment is ‘Mountain Spirit’, they will be able rent you all the equipment you might need and also offer guided tours and lessons in downhill and cross country, they speak English and French. They also rent Fat-Bikes which are ideal for winter rides – guided tours at night.
The Giffre runs beside Samoëns and offers some great rafting experiences! White water, hydrospeed, airboat and canyoning – are all available. Spring and early Summer are best for these when the melt waters come down off the high mountains, the water gets cold but the wetsuits and adrenalin rush will keep you warm.
Samoëns is beside the Haute Giffre river and is a hiker’s paradise. There are walks and hikes for all levels, from an hour or two strolling beside the Giffre to serious full day hikes high up into the mountains (up to 3000m). There are refuges scattered around the high mountains for those who want to spend a night far away from it all.
With hundreds of kilometers of well sign posted trails and numerous guide books offering suggested itineraries you will be spoilt for choice.
Trail running is very popular sport in the region and even more so in Samoëns. Each year in June Samoëns hosts the famous “Samoëns Trail Tour”. There is more than enough to satisfy any enthusiast.
… and much more besides.
There is a swimming pool complex, an ice skating rink, pony trekking, acrobranche, climbing, via ferrata and much much more. Whatever your pleasure in the mountains Samoëns is bound to offer it!
